A working session on service delivery

Fractional CTO

Fractional CTO Services

Senior technology leadership a few days a month, with a build team behind it.

01

What is a fractional CTO?

A fractional CTO is a senior technology leader who works for your business part time, typically a few days a month, instead of as a full-time hire. They take on the job of a Chief Technology Officer: setting the technology roadmap, choosing the architecture and tools, managing developers and vendors, and making sure what gets built is secure and actually serves the business. You may also see it called CTO as a service, a virtual CTO, a part-time CTO or an outsourced CTO. An interim CTO is similar but usually full time for a fixed period, while you hire a permanent one.

Our fractional CTO service is different from a pure advisor in one way: there is a delivery team behind it. When the roadmap calls for custom software, process automation, cloud infrastructure or dashboards, our team can build it, or the CTO can brief and manage your own developers or another vendor. For businesses whose main technology question is AI, see our fractional Chief AI Officer service.

How a fractional CTO works: leadership, developers and vendors feed into a part-time CTO who owns the roadmap, architecture and vendor choices, producing a board-ready roadmap, build-or-buy decisions and delivery backed by a build team.

A fractional CTO is often the step before a full-time hire: they set the direction, build the first team, then help you recruit their permanent replacement.

How a fractional CTO engagement works

Technology review

Two to three weeks looking at your systems, code, vendors, team and costs, ending with a written assessment.

Roadmap

Priorities for the next two to four quarters, agreed with the leadership team, with budget and owners.

Regular leadership

A weekly sync, monthly roadmap review and on-call availability for decisions, at the cadence you choose.

Delivery and hand-over

Work delivered through our team or yours, and when you are ready, help hiring a full-time CTO.

Fractional CTO questions

What is a fractional CTO?
A senior technology leader who works for your company part time, usually a few days a month, and does the job of a Chief Technology Officer: roadmap, architecture, vendors, team and security.
What is the difference between a fractional CTO and a virtual CTO?
In practice they mean the same thing. Virtual CTO, CTO as a service, part-time CTO and outsourced CTO all describe senior technology leadership bought for part of the week rather than as a full-time hire.
How much does a fractional CTO cost?
It depends on the days per month and the scope. It is usually a monthly retainer that costs a fraction of a full-time CTO's salary and benefits. We scope the retainer after a first call about your stage and needs.
When should a startup hire a fractional CTO?
When technology decisions are becoming expensive to get wrong but you do not yet need, or cannot yet afford, a full-time CTO: before a major build, when choosing a development agency, before fundraising due diligence, or when a non-technical founder is managing developers.
What is the difference between a fractional CTO and an interim CTO?
An interim CTO usually works full time for a fixed period, covering a gap until a permanent CTO starts. A fractional CTO works part time on an ongoing basis.
Can your fractional CTO also build the software?
Yes. Unlike an advisor working alone, our fractional CTO has a delivery team behind them for custom software, automation, cloud, data and AI work. You can also keep your own developers or agency and have the CTO manage them.
