Tableau dashboards people open every week, not just at launch

Tableau makes it easy to build something that looks good. The hard part is building dashboards that load in seconds, agree with the numbers finance reports, and still make sense to the person who opens them on a Monday morning. When Tableau disappoints, the cause is rarely the tool. It is usually unmanaged data sources, extracts nobody owns, and a site with hundreds of workbooks and no structure.

Our Tableau consulting services cover dashboard design and development, the data sources behind them, Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server administration, performance tuning and migration in either direction between Tableau and Power BI. A Tableau consultant from our team works in your site and your data, and leaves documentation your analysts can follow.

Much of our dashboard work is for pharma commercial and patient services teams. Our founder, Harsh Khubchandani, came up through pharma commercial operations consulting at ZS, so we know the brand, territory and access views those teams expect.

What our Tableau consulting covers

  • Dashboard design and development

Dashboards designed around the decisions they support, with KPIs agreed before building and a layout that leads from summary to detail.

    • KPI definitions agreed up front
    • Drill-down from national to territory
    • Consistent templates across workbooks
  • Data sources: extracts or live

Published data sources that many workbooks share, with a deliberate choice between extracts (fast, scheduled) and live connections (current, dependent on the database) for each one.

    • Certified published data sources
    • Extract schedules matched to data arrival
    • Relationships and calculations defined once
  • Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server

Site, project and permission structure set up on Tableau Cloud (hosted by Tableau) or Tableau Server (run on your own infrastructure), and help deciding between them.

    • Project and permission design
    • Single sign-on and user provisioning
    • Server to Cloud moves
  • Governance

Rules for who publishes, what gets certified and how row-level security is applied, so the site does not drift back into duplicates.

    • Row-level security with user filters or entitlement tables
    • Certification and naming standards
    • Usage monitoring and clean-up
  • Performance tuning

Slow workbooks diagnosed with performance recordings and fixed at the source, extract, calculation and layout level.

    • Extract and query optimisation
    • Fewer, simpler marks and filters
    • Calculation and LOD clean-up
  • Tableau to Power BI migration (and the reverse)

Workbooks inventoried, rationalised and rebuilt in the target tool, with numbers reconciled side by side before the old reports are retired.

    • Inventory and usage-based rationalisation
    • Calculation and security mapping
    • User training on the new tool

Tableau AI and Tableau within Salesforce

Tableau has been part of Salesforce since 2019, and its newer capabilities are built cloud-first. As of late 2026, the features worth knowing are Tableau Pulse, which delivers metrics and automated insights to business users through Tableau Cloud, Slack and email; Tableau Agent (previously Einstein Copilot for Tableau), which helps authors build calculations and visualisations from natural language; and Tableau Next, an analytics experience built on Salesforce Data Cloud and Agentforce. Availability depends on your edition and licensing, so we check what your contract includes before planning around any of them.

For teams that run Salesforce, the useful part is shorter distance between CRM data and analytics. For everyone else, Pulse is usually the first AI feature that earns its place, because it pushes a small set of agreed metrics to people who would never open a dashboard. Like any AI feature, it is only as good as the metric definitions underneath.

Where Tableau fits for pharma and life sciences teams

Commercial data: brand, territory and field dashboards built on syndicated prescription and sales data and CRM activity
Specialty pharmacy and hub feeds: referral to first fill, status aging and abandonment views refreshed when each vendor file lands
HCP and HCO master data: one prescriber and account master behind every dashboard, so counts match across reports
De-identified patient-level data: patient journey and persistence views on claims data, with row-level security restricting who sees what
Field-ready views: territory dashboards secured by alignment so each representative and manager sees their own geography

05

Case snapshot: patient access reporting

A specialty therapy provider was rebuilding its patient access reporting by hand each cycle, with identifiers that did not match between sources. We built clean identifiers and an MDM structure, automated case pipelines, standardised reporting and dashboards, cutting manual work by 60 to 80 percent and keeping reporting stable. The lesson applies to any Tableau estate: dashboards stay trustworthy when the data underneath is mastered and loaded automatically. For more pharma dashboard work, see pharma commercial analytics.

06

How an engagement runs

Assess

We review your site, the most used and most complained-about workbooks, data sources and how permissions are set.

Design

KPIs, data sources, layout standards and security are agreed, with mock-ups before any build.

Build

Published data sources come first, then dashboards, each reviewed with the people who will use it.

Reconcile and roll out

Numbers are checked against current reports, then rolled out with short training for viewers and authors.

Hand over and support

Documentation for your analysts, and ongoing support for new dashboards and site administration if you want it.

07

How we handle your data

NDA signed before any data is shared
Built in your Tableau site and data platform, not ours
De-identified data wherever the work allows
Protected health information only under your Business Associate Agreement
Work within the licence terms of your syndicated data

Tableau consulting questions

What does a Tableau consultant do?
Designs and builds dashboards, sets up the data sources behind them, administers the site and permissions, and fixes performance problems, so reports are fast, correct and maintainable by your own team.
Should we use extracts or live connections?
Extracts are faster and reduce load on the database, but refresh on a schedule. Live connections show current data but depend on the database's speed. We choose per data source, based on how often the data changes and how fast the source is.
Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server?
Tableau Cloud removes server maintenance and is where newer features such as Pulse arrive. Tableau Server suits organisations that must keep everything on their own infrastructure. Many teams that start on Server move to Cloud over time.
How does a Tableau to Power BI migration work?
We inventory workbooks, retire the unused ones, map data sources, calculations and security to Power BI, rebuild the rest and reconcile numbers side by side. The same process works in reverse for Power BI to Tableau. See our Power BI consulting page for the Power BI side.
Can you fix slow Tableau dashboards?
Yes. We record performance, find whether the time is spent in the query, the extract, calculations or rendering, and fix the cause rather than adding hardware.
Are you a Tableau partner?
We are an independent consultancy and do not claim a vendor partnership or certification. We build in Tableau, Power BI and other BI tools and recommend what suits your organisation.
