How much does a Microsoft Fabric consultant cost? The short answer

Microsoft Fabric consultant cost in 2026 is usually quoted by the day or by the project. In the UK, contract roles in the skills a Fabric build draws on, Power BI and Azure Data Factory, both pay a median of £500 a day, with the 90th percentile at £675 and £699, per IT Jobs Watch for the six months to 1 November 2026. Australian consultancy Team 400's May 2026 guide puts a senior Fabric consultant at AUD 1,800 to 2,600 a day and a discovery and architecture phase at AUD 35,000 to 70,000. A focused first build for a mid-sized company needs a few hundred hours, so the fee typically lands in the tens of thousands.

The consultant is paid once. Fabric capacity is billed every month, and the licence rules around it can matter more than the compute. At US list prices published by AlphaBold in August 2026, an F8 capacity costs $1,051.20 a month on pay-as-you-go and an F64 $8,409.60, with a one-year reservation cutting both by about 40 percent. Below F64, every person who views a Power BI report also needs a Pro licence, which Microsoft lists at $14 a user a month.

This guide sets out the rates we could verify, how the Fabric bill is built, what changed in October 2026, a worked first-year budget, what pharma and other regulated teams add, and when you should not hire anyone.

Microsoft Fabric consultant day rates and project ranges

Fabric is young enough that few rate surveys track it by name. IT Jobs Watch, which tracks UK contract advertised rates, has no Microsoft Fabric category yet, so the closest public benchmarks are the skills a Fabric project is built from. These are the figures we could verify. Treat them as ranges for a first budget, not quotes.

Three notes keep these honest. First, the UK ranges cover every contract role listing the skill, from report builders to architects. Whoever designs your capacity, workspaces and security usually sits near the top of the range; someone building to an agreed design sits near the median. At £500 a day, the median is about £63 an hour on an eight-hour day.

Second, the market is moving in different directions. The Power BI median rose from £475 a year earlier, while Azure Data Factory slipped from £525 and fell 28 places in demand rank, which is consistent with new pipeline work shifting into Fabric's own Data Factory.

Third, consultancies charge a blended rate above contractor figures because the price covers a lead, reviewers and continuity. Several firms ranking for this phrase, including EPC Group and PA in Australia, publish timelines but quote implementation fees only after a scoping call. Ask any firm for its blended day rate and the seniority mix behind it, so you compare like with like.

Microsoft Fabric pricing: the bill most quotes leave out

A consulting fee ends. The capacity bill does not, and your consultant's design decisions set its size. Before you compare proposals, understand how Fabric charges.

Compute is bought as a capacity. Fabric sells F SKUs measured in capacity units (CUs), from F2 to F8192. Microsoft's licensing documentation, updated August 2026, says Azure bills them per second with a one-minute minimum and no commitment, with an optional yearly reservation. AlphaBold's guide of 19 August 2026 lists these US monthly prices:

SKUCUsPay-as-you-go a monthOne-year reserved a month
F22$262.80$156.33
F88$1,051.20$625.33
F1616$2,102.40$1,250.67
F3232$4,204.80$2,501.33
F6464$8,409.60$5,002.67
F128128$16,819.20$10,005.33

Microsoft's own Power BI pricing page describes the reservation as saving 40.5 percent over pay-as-you-go. Prices are regional, so check your own region in the Azure calculator.

The F64 licence cliff. This is where budgets go wrong. Microsoft's documentation states that on F SKUs smaller than F64, each user viewing Power BI content needs a Pro, Premium Per User or individual trial licence. On F64 and above, viewers with a free licence and a viewer role can read reports. Report authors need Pro at any size. Microsoft lists Pro at $14 and Premium Per User at $24 a user a month, paid yearly.

Storage is small by comparison. AlphaBold puts OneLake hot storage at about $0.023 per GB a month, so 500 GB is roughly $12. For most mid-sized companies, capacity and licences are the bill, not storage.

Pausing saves money, with a catch. Pay-as-you-go capacity can be paused, and Microsoft's documentation explains that when you pause, any smoothed usage and overages still owed are added to your Azure bill, and content on that capacity is unavailable until you resume. Pausing suits development capacity, not the one your sales team opens at 8am.

What changed in October 2026. Under Microsoft 365 message center notice MC1469820, from 1 October 2026 Copilot in Fabric, Fabric data agents, AI Functions and Fabric IQ ontologies moved to dynamic consumption, where the CUs used vary with the model, reasoning effort and complexity of each request. If your teams have started using these features, your capacity headroom is now less predictable, and the Capacity Metrics app is where to watch it. Microsoft is also retiring Power BI Premium P SKUs in favour of F SKUs, so any organisation on a P1 needs to price its move to F capacity.

A worked example: first-year Microsoft Fabric implementation cost

Here is how fees, capacity and licences combine. The hours and workload are our own illustrative estimate for this scope, not a quote. Capacity prices are the US list figures above, before any negotiated discount.

The scope. A mid-sized company with Microsoft 365 replaces spreadsheet extracts with a Fabric lakehouse and Power BI. Four sources feed it: the ERP, the CRM, a billing system and monthly files from a data vendor. Six analysts build reports. Sixty managers read them.

The consulting effort. Discovery and requirements, 24 hours. Capacity, workspace, domain and security design, 32 hours. Data Factory ingestion for four sources, 64 hours. Lakehouse and warehouse modelling with data quality checks, 48 hours. Direct Lake semantic model and five core reports, 40 hours. Reconciliation against current reports, 24 hours. Documentation and handover, 8 hours. Total: 240 hours, or 30 days.

Two ways to license the same platform.

OptionCapacity a month (reserved)Power BI licences a monthYear-one platform cost
F8 plus Pro for all 66 users$625.3366 x $14 = $924about $18,600
F64 plus Pro for 6 authors only$5,002.676 x $14 = $84about $61,000

The arithmetic is simple and decisive. The gap between F8 and F64 reserved is about $4,377 a month. At $14 a seat, that buys Pro for roughly 312 people. So unless you have more than about 300 report viewers, or your workloads genuinely need F64's compute, the smaller capacity plus Pro licences is far cheaper. F64 is the compute equivalent of a P1 in Microsoft's SKU table, which makes it the obvious default when leaving P1, so run this sum before accepting it.

Add a development capacity. A separate F2 paused outside working hours, 12 hours a day on 22 days, runs about $95 a month at pay-as-you-go rates instead of $262.80 left on. That keeps experiments from throttling production reports.

Who builds itBuild cost (30 days)Year-one platform (F8 option)
UK contractor at the £500 median£15,000about $19,700 with dev capacity
UK contractor near the 90th percentile, £690about £20,700about $19,700
Senior consultant at Team 400's AUD 1,800 to 2,600AUD 54,000 to 78,000about $19,700

Two things stand out. The platform bill is set by design choices, not by who you hire, provided they make the right ones: choosing F64 by default here would add over $40,000 a year. And the 24 hours of reconciliation is the line cheap proposals drop first, though it is what proves the new numbers match finance.

Fabric implementation vs migration vs optimisation vs support

Implementation

Capacity and workspace design, the first sources loaded through Data Factory, a lakehouse or warehouse, a Direct Lake semantic model and the first reports. The worked example above is a typical mid-sized case. Hours grow with each source, security rule and audience that needs its own view.

Migration

Moving dedicated SQL pools, Spark jobs and Azure Data Factory pipelines into Fabric adds an inventory of what exists, schema conversion, code changes and a period of running both systems until outputs match. Team 400 puts migrations from Synapse or Databricks at AUD 180,000 to 450,000 over 12 to 20 weeks; the number of pipelines and reports drives the cost more than data volume.

Cost optimisation

A short, bounded engagement: read the Capacity Metrics app, find the items burning CUs, fix refresh schedules and inefficient dataflows, right-size the SKU, and rerun the F64 versus Pro sum against your real viewer count. Team 400 lists remediation and optimisation at AUD 45,000 to 110,000; for a mid-sized tenant the scope is often smaller.

Ongoing support

New sources, model changes, access requests and monitoring after go-live. A monthly allowance is usually cheaper than a new project each quarter and keeps one team familiar with your tenant.

What pushes Microsoft Fabric consulting cost up or down

  • Number and state of sources

A Microsoft source with a mirroring option is quick. Vendor files in shifting formats, or a source with no stable keys, is where days go.

    • Count every source
    • Check for shared identifiers
  • Security and governance

Row-level security by region or client, Purview sensitivity labels and workspace roles add design and testing time.

    • List roles before scoping
    • Plan for exceptions
  • Legacy estate to convert

Synapse pools, Data Factory pipelines and Power BI dataflows each need converting and testing. This, not data volume, sets migration cost.

    • Inventory pipelines first
  • Capacity and licence design

Choosing between a small SKU plus Pro and F64 with free viewers can swing the platform bill by tens of thousands a year. That analysis is worth paying for.

    • Count viewers honestly
    • Separate dev from production
  • Copilot and AI scope

Data agents and AI Functions now consume CUs dynamically. Scope them as a second phase on governed data, with a consumption test first.

    • Price AI work separately
    • Watch CUs in the metrics app
  • Handover

Documented pipelines and models your team can extend cost a little more to deliver and far less to live with.

    • Everything in your tenant
    • Git integration and training

What Fabric work costs in pharma and other regulated industries

Regulated data sits at the top of every rate card, and life sciences adds its own lines. If you work in pharma or biotech, budget for these on top of a generic quote.

Harder data. Commercial pharma models join syndicated prescription data, CRM activity, specialty pharmacy feeds and hub files, each with its own prescriber and product identifiers. Matching prescribers across sources usually takes more days than the pipelines. Our guide to the pharma commercial data warehouse covers that layer, and our MDM implementation cost guide prices the matching work.

Tighter access. Third-party data licences limit who sees what and at what level of detail, which shapes workspace design, row-level security and Purview labels. Many brand teams also have more than 300 field and head-office viewers, which is exactly where the F64 sum flips and free viewer access starts to pay for itself.

Patient data and validation. Most commercial analytics uses de-identified data. Where protected health information is involved, it should be processed only under your Business Associate Agreement, and data used for quality or manufacturing decisions may fall under your validation procedures. Your quality team decides; if validation applies, ask for its cost as a separate line.

Finance and manufacturing face their own versions: audit trails, segregation of duties and source systems never designed to be joined. The rule is the same. Price the data work honestly and the Fabric build follows.

How to get an accurate Microsoft Fabric quote

List the decisions the data must support

Write down the ten questions leadership asks most often and who asks them. A good consultant scopes from these, not from a list of tables.

Inventory sources, pipelines and services to retire

For each source: system, how data gets out, refresh frequency and owner. For a migration, count Synapse pools, Data Factory pipelines, dataflows and dependent reports.

Count authors and viewers

How many people build content and how many only read it. This single number decides whether F64 or a smaller SKU plus Pro is cheaper.

Check your current Microsoft agreement

Existing P1 capacity, Pro licences already in Microsoft 365 E5, and your renewal date all change the sum.

Ask for a capacity and licence estimate

A competent consultant estimates the SKU, the licence mix and a development capacity alongside the fee. A proposal without one leaves the recurring number for you to discover.

Request a phased, fixed-scope price

A short fixed-fee discovery, then a fixed price for the first release. Open-ended day rates on an unclear scope are how budgets double.

Agree acceptance and handover

Define how outputs will be reconciled with current numbers, what tolerance counts as matching, and what documentation and training you receive.

Red flags in a Fabric proposal

  • F64 assumed without a viewer count

If nobody asked how many people read reports, the SKU was not sized, it was guessed.

  • No development capacity

Building and testing on the production capacity invites throttled reports during the working day.

  • Reservation on day one

Reserve once real usage is measured. Committing a year before the workload exists locks in a guess.

  • Built in their tenant

Your tenant, your Azure subscription and your repository from day one, so you own the work outright.

  • No reconciliation step

Nothing that checks new outputs against current reports means finance finds the gaps for you.

  • Unclear who delivers

Ask for the names and Fabric experience of the people doing the work, not only those selling it.

When you should not hire a Microsoft Fabric consultant

Skip it if you only need Power BI reports on a few clean sources. Pro licences alone may do the job, and our Power BI consultant cost guide prices that route without any capacity at all.

Hold off if nobody agrees on the numbers. If customers are duplicated across systems or revenue is counted three ways, a lakehouse will only store the disagreement faster. Settle definitions and master data first; our data management services start there.

Reconsider the platform if you are not a Microsoft shop or your work is heavy engineering and machine learning. Our Databricks consultant cost and Snowflake consultant cost guides price the alternatives, and we will tell you plainly if Fabric is not the cheaper option for your case.

Hire full time instead if requests are constant and you can keep a data engineer busy every week. A consultant is best for the foundation, a migration or a capacity rescue, not permanent headcount.

If you have several sources, real security needs and a capacity bill that has to stay predictable, a consultant usually saves money over trial and error. Our Microsoft Fabric consulting and Azure data engineering page sets out what we build, and our Power BI consulting page covers the reporting layer on top.

Questions about Microsoft Fabric consultant cost

How much does a Microsoft Fabric consultant cost per day?
There is no Fabric-specific UK index yet, but IT Jobs Watch reports a £500 median day rate for contract roles citing Power BI or Azure Data Factory in the six months to 1 November 2026, with the 90th percentile near £675 to £699. Team 400 puts senior Fabric consultants in Australia at AUD 1,800 to 2,600 a day.
How much does a Microsoft Fabric implementation cost?
It depends on sources, security rules and legacy pipelines more than data volume. Our illustrative mid-sized scope of four sources needs about 30 consulting days, around £15,000 at the UK median, plus a platform bill of roughly $19,700 a year on an F8 with Pro licences.
How much does Microsoft Fabric cost per month?
At US list prices published by AlphaBold in August 2026, F2 is $262.80 a month pay-as-you-go, F8 $1,051.20 and F64 $8,409.60, with one-year reservations about 40 percent cheaper. Power BI Pro licences at $14 a user a month come on top below F64.
Do we need F64 to share Power BI reports?
No. Below F64 you can still share reports, but every viewer needs a Pro or Premium Per User licence. F64 and above lets free-licence users with a viewer role read reports, which only pays off once you have roughly 300 or more viewers.
What does a Synapse to Fabric migration cost?
Team 400's May 2026 guide puts migrations from Synapse or Databricks at AUD 180,000 to 450,000 over 12 to 20 weeks. The count of pipelines, SQL objects and dependent reports drives the price, so inventory those first.
Why is our Fabric capacity running hotter since October 2026?
From 1 October 2026, Copilot in Fabric, data agents, AI Functions and Fabric IQ ontologies moved to dynamic consumption under Microsoft notice MC1469820, so each request uses CUs according to its complexity. Check the Capacity Metrics app to see which items changed.
Should I pay a day rate or a fixed price?
Fixed price on a written scope protects your budget; day rates suit support and small changes. A common pattern is a fixed-fee discovery, a fixed price for the first release and a block of days afterwards.
