Snowflake vs Databricks for pharma: the short answer
Snowflake vs Databricks for pharma comes down to who does most of the work on the platform. Choose Snowflake when the main job is governed SQL reporting for brand, market access and sales operations, and when your data vendors already deliver through Snowflake shares. Choose Databricks when data engineers and data scientists will build pipelines, machine learning models and AI agents in Python, or when R&D, imaging or genomics data sits alongside commercial data. Both platforms handle PHI under a Business Associate Agreement, both cost roughly what you let them, and either is a sound choice for a mid-sized pharma or emerging biotech that sets it up well.
The comparisons that rank for this question today are long R&D essays about genomics pipelines and drug discovery. Useful for a research IT team, but they say almost nothing about the decision most commercial and patient services teams face: where to land IQVIA or Komodo data, specialty pharmacy and hub feeds, 867 and 852 files and Veeva CRM, so that one set of numbers reaches the brand review.
This guide covers that decision. It sets out how each platform charges, with list prices from named sources and a worked monthly cost, what HIPAA requires on each, how pharma data actually arrives, a decision table by workload, the mistakes we see most, and when you need neither. It is written for commercial operations, analytics, IT and finance leads at pharma and biotech companies choosing or renewing a data platform.
Databricks vs Snowflake for life sciences at a glance
The two products started in different places and have spent several years moving towards each other. Snowflake began as a cloud data warehouse and has added Python, open table formats and AI features. Databricks began as a Spark engine for data engineering and machine learning and has added a SQL warehouse and business-user tools. The differences that remain are about defaults: what is easy on day one, and what your team has to build.
| Factor | Snowflake | Databricks |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | SQL data warehouse, fully managed | Lakehouse on open files in your own cloud storage |
| Natural users | Analysts, BI developers, sales operations | Data engineers, data scientists, ML engineers |
| Pricing unit | Credits per second of warehouse time, plus storage | DBUs per second of compute, plus cloud VMs on classic compute |
| PHI and HIPAA | Business Critical edition or higher, with a signed BAA | Compliance security profile on each workspace, with the BAA |
| Receiving vendor data | Secure data sharing and Snowflake Marketplace, widely used by healthcare data vendors | Delta Sharing (now documented as OpenSharing), an open protocol, plus Databricks Marketplace |
| Governance | Role hierarchy, masking and row access policies, Horizon | Unity Catalog for tables, files, models and lineage |
| Open formats | Apache Iceberg tables, readable by external engines through Horizon Catalog | Delta Lake natively, with Iceberg interoperability |
| AI features | Cortex AI Functions, Cortex Search, Cortex Agents and Snowflake Intelligence | Mosaic AI, Model Serving, Agent Bricks, Genie, Unity AI Gateway |
| Effort to run well | Lower: fewer settings, warehouse sizing is the main lever | Higher: cluster types, policies and job design all affect cost |

Which platform fits your pharma workload?
Commercial BI
Most of the work is joining licensed data to internal data, applying business rules in SQL and serving Power BI or Tableau. Snowflake fits this with the least engineering effort: size a warehouse per workload, set auto-suspend and let analysts work in SQL. Databricks SQL does the same job well, but you will want an engineer who understands its compute options.
Vendor data intake
If your vendors offer a Snowflake share, data appears in your account without file transfers or load jobs. IQVIA was named Snowflake's 2022 Marketplace Healthcare and Life Sciences Partner of the Year, and Komodo Health put Healthcare Map datasets on Snowflake Marketplace in October 2025. On Databricks, ask each vendor about Delta Sharing or plan file-based loads.
Data science and AI
Teams that train models, track experiments and deploy them want notebooks, MLflow and model serving next to the data. That is Databricks' home ground, and its 2026 releases (Agent Bricks, Unity AI Gateway, Genie) aim squarely at governed agents. Snowflake's Cortex features cover classification, extraction and natural-language questions inside SQL, which is enough for many commercial teams.
R&D and clinical
Large files, mixed formats and Spark-scale processing favour Databricks, which is why the R&D-focused comparisons lean that way. If your company has both research and commercial data teams, it is common for research to sit on Databricks and commercial reporting on Snowflake, joined through open formats or sharing.
Small team
The platform matters less than who runs it. A small team with SQL skills usually gets to trusted numbers faster on Snowflake. A small team with Python and Spark skills will be productive on Databricks. Pick the one your people, or your partner, already know well, and spend the saved time on definitions.
How pharma commercial data lands on each platform
The platform question is really a data intake question. A typical specialty brand receives five or six kinds of feed, and each arrives differently.
- Syndicated and claims data. Prescription audits, patient claims and reference data increasingly arrive as shares rather than files. Snowflake has the head start in healthcare data sharing. Databricks' OpenSharing protocol lets a provider share tables with users on any platform, so a vendor on Databricks can still serve a Snowflake customer and the reverse. For a vendor-by-vendor view of claims sources, see our Komodo Health vs IQVIA comparison.
- Specialty pharmacy, hub and distributor files. Status files, dispense data and 867 and 852 transactions still mostly arrive as flat files over SFTP or through an aggregator. Both platforms load them through cloud storage. The work is in mapping each pharmacy's status codes to one patient status model, not in the platform.
- Veeva CRM. Veeva made its Direct Data API available at no additional licence fee as part of Vault Platform on 27 February 2025, and publishes open-source accelerators that load Vault data into Snowflake, Databricks, Amazon Redshift and Microsoft Fabric. Our Veeva CRM data integration work uses whichever target you choose.
- Finance and contracts. Chargebacks, rebates and gross-to-net inputs usually come from the ERP and contract systems through a managed connector or scheduled extract.
- Tokenised patient data. Linking claims, hub and pharmacy records relies on tokens from your tokenisation provider, which works the same on either platform as long as tokens are generated consistently.
The practical test: list every feed you receive today and every one you expect after launch, and ask each vendor in writing which delivery methods it supports. If most say Snowflake share, that is a strong reason to choose Snowflake. If most say files, the platform choice can rest on your team's skills.
Snowflake vs Databricks cost: list prices and a worked example
Neither platform has a licence fee. You pay for compute time and storage, so cost follows usage and configuration far more than the vendor you pick.
Snowflake charges credits for each second a virtual warehouse runs, with a 60-second minimum each time it starts, according to Snowflake's documentation. An X-Small warehouse uses 1 credit per hour, Small 2, Medium 4 and Large 8. Espresso AI's Snowflake pricing guide, read in October 2026, gives on-demand list rates on AWS US East of $2.00 per credit on Standard, $3.00 on Enterprise and $4.00 on Business Critical, with on-demand storage at roughly $40 per terabyte per month and around $23 on a capacity contract. The same workload uses the same credits on every edition: higher editions cost more per credit for security features, not speed.
Databricks charges DBUs for each second of compute, and on classic compute your cloud provider also bills for the virtual machines. DoiT's Databricks pricing guide (March 2026, updated May 2026) lists approximate AWS Premium rates of $0.15 per DBU for Jobs compute, $0.55 for All-Purpose compute, $0.22 for a classic SQL warehouse and $0.75 for Serverless SQL, where the serverless rate includes the machines. The same guide notes that running production ETL on an All-Purpose cluster instead of a Jobs cluster can raise that workload's DBU bill by 3 to 4 times with no change to the work done.
Worked example (illustrative, list prices, not a quote). An emerging biopharma with one specialty brand runs three Snowflake workloads on Business Critical, because identified hub records carry PHI:
| Workload | Warehouse | Hours per month | Credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nightly loads: SP, hub, 867/852, CRM | Small (2 credits/hour) | 1.5 hours x 30 days = 45 | 90 |
| Power BI refreshes and dashboard queries | X-Small (1 credit/hour) | 10 hours x 22 working days = 220 | 220 |
| Analyst ad hoc work | Medium (4 credits/hour) | 1 hour x 22 working days = 22 | 88 |
| Total compute | 398 credits | ||
At $4.00 a credit that is $1,592 a month in compute, plus about $40 for a terabyte of compressed storage on demand: roughly $1,630 a month at list price. On Enterprise, if no feed carried PHI, the same work would be $1,194 plus storage. The biggest lever is the dashboard warehouse: if auto-suspend is set to one minute and queries only keep it awake four hours a day, its 220 credits fall to 88.
To price the same plan on Databricks, take the DBU-per-hour figure for each compute size from Databricks' pricing calculator, multiply by the same hours and the per-DBU rate above, and add VM costs for classic compute. For pipelines, the Jobs versus All-Purpose choice moves the answer more than the platform does. Either way, the platform bill for a team of this size is usually smaller than the cost of the people who build and run it.
HIPAA, PHI and access control on each platform
Snowflake: Business Critical and a BAA
Snowflake's documentation states that support for PHI under HIPAA and HITRUST CSF is in Business Critical edition and Virtual Private Snowflake, and that a signed BAA must be in place before any PHI is stored.
- Standard and Enterprise are not for PHI
- Sign the BAA first
- Budget the higher credit rate
Databricks: compliance security profile
Databricks' documentation says HIPAA controls require the compliance security profile, which adds monitoring agents and a hardened compute image, on every workspace that processes PHI, and that enabling it for HIPAA accepts Databricks' BAA.
- Enable per workspace
- Check which preview features are supported
- Keep PHI and non-PHI workspaces apart
Column and row level access
Both platforms mask sensitive columns and filter rows by role. Use them so field-facing dashboards never see patient-level detail and agency partners see only what their contract allows.
- Snowflake masking and row access policies
- Unity Catalog row filters and column masks
De-identified by design
Most commercial use cases do not need identified patient data. Keep PHI in a restricted zone, publish tokenised or aggregated tables onward, and you reduce both risk and the number of people inside the BAA boundary.
- Tokenise before linking
- Aggregate before sharing
- Log who reads restricted tables
GxP is your validation, not theirs
If any data supports a regulated GxP process, the platform is part of your validated system and you own the validation evidence. Most commercial analytics sits outside GxP, so confirm the scope with quality early rather than over-engineering every pipeline.
- Agree scope with quality
- Version-control all transformations
Audit and lineage
Compliance reviews ask who changed a number and where it came from. Snowflake's access history and Unity Catalog's lineage both answer this if pipelines are built in code rather than by hand.
- Pipelines in Git
- Tests on every business rule
How to choose between Snowflake and Databricks in six steps
List your feeds and how each is delivered
Write down every data source today and after launch, and ask each vendor whether it delivers by Snowflake share, Delta Sharing, API or file. This often settles the question on its own.
Name who will work on the platform
Count the SQL analysts, Python engineers and data scientists who will build on it in the next two years, including your partners. Choose for the majority.
Mark where PHI lives
Identify which feeds carry PHI. That decides whether you need Snowflake Business Critical or a Databricks compliance security profile, and how to split restricted and open zones.
Price one real month
Estimate hours per workload as in the example above, at list prices on both platforms, then ask both vendors for a committed-use quote.
Run a two-week proof of concept
Load one specialty pharmacy feed and one licensed dataset, build one dashboard, and measure build time, query speed and cost on each platform with the people who would run it.
Decide, then write the standards
Pick one platform for commercial data, then set naming, environments, roles and cost alerts before the second pipeline is built. The standards matter more than the choice.
Common mistakes when pharma teams choose a data platform
Choosing from an R&D comparison
Genomics and imaging benchmarks say little about loading pharmacy status files and building brand dashboards. Judge on your own feeds and users.
Paying Business Critical for everything
If only hub data carries PHI, consider whether it can be tokenised before landing, or kept in a restricted account, so the rest runs at a lower rate.
Leaving warehouses and clusters running
Snowflake warehouses without auto-suspend and Databricks All-Purpose clusters used for scheduled jobs are the two most common causes of surprise bills.
Running both without a reason
Two platforms means two security models, two sets of skills and two places a number can be defined. Run both only when separate teams genuinely need each.
Migrating the mess
Moving the same spreadsheets and undocumented logic to a new platform gives you faster wrong numbers. Fix definitions, such as active patient and new to brand, during the move.
No owner after go-live
Vendor feeds change format, pharmacies add status codes and costs creep. Someone has to own monitoring, or a partner has to be contracted to.
When to run both, and when you need neither
Run both when a research or data science group already works on Databricks and a commercial group already reports from Snowflake, and both are productive. Do not force a migration for its own sake. Share curated tables in an open format, agree which platform holds each definition, and make sure every report states its source.
You may need neither yet if you are pre-launch with a handful of data sources, or if your company already runs Microsoft 365 and Power BI and your volumes are modest. A well-built warehouse in Microsoft Fabric or Azure, or a managed commercial data warehouse from a pharma data vendor, can be the right first step. We compare those routes in our guide to the pharma commercial data warehouse, and cover the Microsoft route on our Microsoft Fabric and Azure consulting page.
Do not buy either as a fix for disagreeing numbers on its own. If sales operations and patient services count active patients differently, a new platform will compute both versions faster. Settle the definitions first, then build them once.
How Greenwolf helps
We build on both platforms and resell neither, so our recommendation follows your feeds, your team and your budget. Our founder, Harsh Khubchandani, came up through pharma commercial operations consulting at ZS, so we know what syndicated prescription data, specialty pharmacy feeds and HCP masters look like when they land, and what the brand team expects to see at the other end.
On a platform decision we list your feeds and delivery methods, price a real month on both platforms and run a short proof of concept with your data. After the decision, our Snowflake consulting services and Databricks consulting services teams set up the account or workspaces, the PHI boundary, the pipelines and cost controls, and hand over code your team can own. The dashboards and definitions on top sit within our specialty pharmacy analytics practice.
