Veeva Compass vs IQVIA: the short answer

Veeva Compass vs IQVIA is a choice between a newer, patient-first US data suite sold with unlimited use per brand, and the long-standing industry standard for projected prescription volume. Keep IQVIA where your numbers have to match what the rest of the market reports, such as incentive compensation, goal setting and national share, or where you need data outside the US. Consider Veeva Compass where you want daily patient-level data, retail and non-retail volume in one view and fewer restrictions on how many teams and agencies can use the data. Since IQVIA and Veeva settled their legal dispute in August 2025, you can also mix the two inside each other's software, so this is no longer an all-or-nothing decision.

The hard part is not the licence. It is that Compass and IQVIA build their prescriber numbers differently, so a territory can show a different TRx count in each, and every downstream report (targeting, sales crediting, brand dashboards) moves when you switch. This guide maps each Compass product to its IQVIA counterpart, lays out the published figures, explains what the settlement changed, and gives you a parallel test to run before any renewal.

It is written for commercial operations, analytics, sales operations and finance leads at pharma and biotech companies in the US, especially mid-sized and emerging teams facing an IQVIA renewal or a first data purchase ahead of launch.

What is Veeva Compass, and what is the IQVIA equivalent?

Veeva Compass is Veeva's US commercial data suite. It has three core products, and each one lines up against an IQVIA product that most US brand teams already know. The mapping below uses Veeva's Compass product pages and feature briefs, and IQVIA's US prescription information and LAAD product pages, all read in November 2026.

The last row matters more than it looks. Compass connects to Veeva OpenData through Veeva IDs, while IQVIA data is keyed to OneKey. If your CRM and warehouse run on one reference set, the data product that shares its identifiers will be cheaper to integrate. We compare the reference data side in our Veeva OpenData vs IQVIA OneKey guide.

Veeva Compass vs IQVIA by the numbers

These are each vendor's own published figures, plus one public description from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which uses IQVIA Xponent for its dispensing rate maps. Neither vendor publishes list prices.

Two cautions on reading this table. First, Compass Prescriber counts retail and non-retail products together, while the CDC figure above describes Xponent's retail pharmacy sample. If your brand is a physician-administered or buy-and-bill product, the useful comparison is non-retail coverage, which you must ask both vendors to show on your product. Second, Compass National publishes the percentage of each projection that comes from actual records, which is a useful transparency check. Ask IQVIA for the equivalent on your market so you are comparing like with like.

What the 2025 IQVIA and Veeva settlement changed for buyers

From 2017 until August 2025, IQVIA and Veeva were in litigation over data access. IQVIA alleged Veeva had used its data without authorisation; Veeva countersued, alleging IQVIA used its position to stop customers using IQVIA data in Veeva software. In August 2025 the two companies dismissed all claims with prejudice, with no damages paid by either side, and signed long-term clinical and commercial partnerships, as reported by BioXconomy and MedTech Intelligence at the time.

For a commercial data buyer the important part is the pair of master data and software third-party access agreements. Under them, customers can use IQVIA data in Veeva Network for master data management, in Veeva Nitro for analytics and in Veeva AI, and can pull Veeva data into IQVIA's commercial products and services. In practice this means three things:

  • Your software no longer decides your data. Running Veeva CRM no longer pushes you away from IQVIA data, and running IQVIA analytics no longer pushes you away from Compass.
  • Hybrid set-ups are realistic. A common pattern is IQVIA Xponent for incentive compensation and Compass Patient for patient journey work, both landing in the same warehouse.
  • Third-party access is easier, not automatic. Agencies and consultants who touch IQVIA data still work under IQVIA's access terms. Check what your licence allows before an outside firm builds on it.

Which data source fits your commercial question?

Incentive compensation

IC plans need a number the field trusts and that stays stable from quarter to quarter. Many US sales organisations already credit on Xponent, so the history, the goal-setting models and the field's expectations are all built on it. Moving IC to Compass Prescriber is possible, but treat it as a plan redesign, not a data swap.

Targeting

Targeting depends on ranking prescribers correctly, not on matching an industry total. Compass Prescriber's combined retail and non-retail view and unlimited use across teams suit this well, especially for brands with a large medical-benefit share. Score both on how many of your known top treaters land in the top deciles.

Patient journeys

Compass Patient offers daily data, 8+ years of history and both open and closed claims. IQVIA answers the same questions with LAAD and LAAD Plus. Choose on a feasibility count for your indication, not on headline patient totals.

Global or launch

Compass is US only. If forecasting or launch sequencing covers Europe, Japan or other markets, IQVIA remains the source with data in those countries. For a first US launch, Compass's per-brand unlimited model can be simpler to budget than several separate IQVIA products.

Projected vs counted data: why switching moves your numbers

Both vendors project. Xponent takes dispensing from a large retail pharmacy sample and projects to 100 percent of the market. Compass Prescriber and National project from Veeva's patient-first claims network, and Compass Patient counts linked patient records. Different inputs and different projection methods mean the same prescriber can show a different TRx in each source for the same month, and both can be defensible.

A worked example. The figures below are illustrative, chosen to show the pattern, not taken from any client. A specialty brand with 40 territories runs IC on Xponent and is considering Compass Prescriber at renewal. The analytics team loads six months of both into the warehouse and compares:

  • National TRx differs by 4 percent between the two sources. That sounds small, and leadership is relaxed.
  • Territory TRx differs by between 1 and 18 percent, because the brand's non-retail volume is concentrated in a few large health systems that the two sources see differently.
  • Top-decile prescribers overlap by 82 percent. The remaining 18 percent are mostly prescribers in integrated delivery networks, which matters for targeting.
  • Payout impact: re-running last quarter's IC plan on Compass numbers moves 9 of 40 representatives across a payout tier.

The national number would have passed any quick check. The territory and payout numbers are what the field would have felt. In this example the sensible decision is to move targeting and brand reporting to Compass now, keep IC on Xponent for the rest of the plan year, and redesign the IC plan with both sources side by side before the switch. That parallel period is the single most useful thing a team can buy before deciding.

How to test Veeva Compass against IQVIA before you switch

Write the market definition

List the products, NDCs, HCPCS or J-codes, diagnosis codes and the retail and non-retail channels that define your market. Both vendors must answer against the same document.

Ask for the same sample from both

Request six to twelve months of prescriber-level data for your market from Compass Prescriber and from your current Xponent feed, plus a feasibility count from Compass Patient and LAAD if patient work is in scope.

Reconcile against what you already trust

Compare both to your own 867 sales, specialty pharmacy shipments and hub enrollments. The source whose gaps you can explain is the safer one for decisions that pay people.

Re-run your real reports

Rebuild last quarter's decile file, territory rankings and IC calculation on each source. Count how many prescribers change decile and how many representatives change payout tier.

Map integration and identifiers

Check how each feed joins to your CRM, MDM and warehouse: Veeva IDs or OneKey IDs, delivery format, and how many crosswalks you would need to build and maintain.

Negotiate with evidence

Price the term with the test results in hand. Write refresh, history and restatement commitments, permitted agency use and exit terms for derived tables into the contract.

Common mistakes when comparing Compass and IQVIA

  • Judging on national totals

National numbers often agree within a few percent. Territory, decile and payout differences are where the business impact sits.

  • Switching IC mid-year

Changing the crediting source during a plan year breaks goal comparisons and invites disputes. Switch at a plan boundary after a parallel run.

  • Ignoring non-retail

For physician-administered products, retail-only comparisons miss most of the volume. Test the medical-benefit channel explicitly.

  • Assuming unlimited means free to integrate

Unlimited use per brand lowers licence friction, but warehouse loading, identifier mapping and report rebuilds still cost time and money.

  • Forgetting the reference data

Prescriber data keyed to a different HCP master than your CRM creates a permanent matching job. Count the crosswalk work before you choose.

  • Overlooking ex-US needs

If global brand reporting uses IQVIA, a US-only switch means two methods in one forecast. Decide where that seam sits before signing.

When to keep IQVIA, when to add Compass, and when you need neither

Keep IQVIA if incentive compensation, managed markets contracts or board reporting are built on Xponent and NPA, if you need data outside the US, or if your team relies on IQVIA services as well as data. The cost of moving those processes is real, and the settlement means you can still use Veeva software around IQVIA data.

Add or switch to Compass if your brand has a large non-retail share, if several internal teams and agencies need the same data and per-use licensing has been a constant negotiation, if you want daily patient-level data for patient finding, or if you are launching your first US brand and want one per-brand subscription rather than several products. Veeva's customer story on Unicycive describes a launch team using prescriber-level, national projected and patient-level claims data together from one Compass subscription; read vendor case studies as examples, not benchmarks.

You may need neither yet if you are pre-commercial and your questions are about epidemiology rather than prescribers, or if your product moves entirely through a small specialty pharmacy network. In that case your own specialty pharmacy, hub and 867 data, cleaned and linked, often answers the operational questions first. Our specialty pharmacy data analytics work starts there, and the Symphony Health vs IQVIA comparison covers another alternative source.

How Greenwolf helps

We do not resell Veeva, IQVIA or any other data provider and we are not paid by them, so our only interest is that the data fits your questions and your systems. Our founder came up through pharma commercial operations consulting at ZS, and our pharma commercial analytics practice builds the layer between licensed data and the people who use it.

On a Compass or IQVIA decision we write the market definition with you, load both samples into one model, rebuild your decile, territory and IC outputs on each, and show exactly who and what moves. After you choose, we build the pipelines into your pharma commercial data warehouse, map identifiers to your CRM through our Veeva CRM integration work, and redesign reporting for incentive compensation where needed. For a specialty therapy provider whose identifiers did not line up across sources, clean identifiers and automated pipelines cut manual reporting work by 60 to 80 percent.

Questions about Veeva Compass and IQVIA

What is Veeva Compass?
Veeva Compass is Veeva's US commercial data suite. It includes Compass Patient (longitudinal patient data), Compass Prescriber (projected prescriptions and procedures at HCP, HCO and ZIP level) and Compass National (state and national projections), with add-ons such as Compass Pathway for rejected and reversed claims.
Is Veeva Compass a replacement for IQVIA Xponent?
Compass Prescriber covers the same job as Xponent: prescriber-level volume for targeting, segmentation and incentive compensation. Whether it replaces Xponent for you depends on how your numbers reconcile in a parallel test, especially at territory level and for non-retail products.
How much does Veeva Compass cost compared with IQVIA?
Neither vendor publishes list prices. Compass is sold per subscribed brand with unlimited access to the available data, while IQVIA licenses individual products and uses. Budget separately for warehouse integration, identifier mapping and the analyst time to rebuild reports.
Can I use IQVIA data in Veeva software?
Yes. Under the third-party access agreements signed when IQVIA and Veeva settled in August 2025, customers can use IQVIA data in Veeva Network, Veeva Nitro and Veeva AI, and Veeva data in IQVIA commercial products. Check your own licence for agency and consultant access terms.
Does Veeva Compass include non-retail data?
Yes. Veeva states that Compass Prescriber and National cover retail and non-retail products for the top 4,000 brands, including total medical administrations. Ask for a sample on your own product to see how well your sites of care are captured.
How fresh is Veeva Compass data?
Veeva describes Compass Patient as daily patient data. Compass Prescriber holds 3 years of history and Compass National 5 years. Confirm delivery cadence and restatement rules for each feed in your contract.
Should a small biotech buy Veeva Compass or IQVIA first?
For a first US launch with no existing IC history on Xponent, Compass's per-brand model can be simpler to budget and share across teams. If you need ex-US data or your investors and partners expect IQVIA numbers, start with IQVIA. Either way, run a feasibility count on your market before signing.
