What is generative engine optimization?

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the work of making your content more likely to be found, quoted and linked when an AI system answers a question. Those systems include Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Copilot. Instead of a list of ten blue links, the searcher gets a written answer with a handful of cited sources. GEO is about being one of those sources.

The term comes from a research paper. Aggarwal and colleagues at IIT Delhi and Princeton (arXiv 2311.09735, presented at KDD 2024) tested ways of rewriting web content and measured how often it appeared in generative engine answers. Their best methods raised visibility by up to 40%. The methods that worked were plain ones: citing sources, adding quotations and adding statistics. Keyword stuffing showed little or no improvement. Lower-ranked sites gained the most, which is encouraging for smaller businesses competing with large publishers.

We are a consulting and technology firm in automation, analytics and AI, with offices in India and the USA. We treat AI search optimization as an extension of good SEO with sharper evidence standards, not as a separate trick.

02

Why GEO matters: what AI answers do to clicks

When an AI summary appears, fewer people click through. Pew Research Center tracked 900 US adults across 68,879 Google searches in March 2025 and reported in July 2025 that users clicked a traditional result 8% of the time when an AI summary appeared, against 15% when it did not. Only 1% clicked a link inside the summary itself. Pew found AI summaries on 18% of the searches it observed.

Two industry studies point the same way. Ahrefs analysed 300,000 keywords in April 2025 and found the click-through rate for the first organic position was 34.5% lower when an AI Overview appeared. Seer Interactive's September 2025 update found organic click-through fell 61% and paid click-through 68% on queries with an AI Overview. Seer also found that brands cited inside the AI Overview earned 35% more organic clicks than those that were not. That is a correlation, not proof of cause, but it is the clearest sign of why being cited matters.

Estimates of how many searches show an AI Overview vary widely by study, roughly from 16% to 48%, depending on the keyword set and industry. Either way, a meaningful share of the questions your buyers ask is now answered before they reach any website.

03

What Google says you need, and what you do not

A lot of GEO advice sells special files and markup. Google's own guidance is more modest. Its Search Central page on AI features says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that you do not need special AI text files, markup or schema for them. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. That is the bar.

On llms.txt specifically, Google's John Mueller is reported to have said that no AI system currently uses it. We do not sell llms.txt files as a ranking lever. If a client wants one for other reasons, it takes minutes and we say plainly what it does not do.

So the foundations of generative engine optimization are the foundations of search: pages Google can crawl and index, content that answers the question well, and signals that you are a credible source. What GEO adds is a stricter editorial standard (direct answers, named sources, real numbers, quotable sentences) and a habit of checking what the AI engines actually say about you.

What our GEO services include

  • Prompt and query map

The questions your buyers ask AI assistants, grouped by intent and stage, so the work targets real conversations rather than single keywords.

    • Questions from sales calls and support
    • Comparison and cost questions
    • Priority by commercial value
  • AI visibility baseline

Where you are cited today across Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Copilot, and which competitors are cited instead.

    • Citations per engine
    • Competitor share of answers
    • Repeated on a schedule
  • Indexing and eligibility

Crawl, index and snippet checks first, because a page Google cannot index or snippet will not appear in its AI features at all.

    • Index coverage in Search Console
    • No accidental nosnippet tags
    • Fast, crawlable pages
  • Answer-first rewrites

Key pages restructured so each section opens with a direct answer, followed by evidence, named sources and specific figures.

    • Question-style headings
    • Statistics with sources named
    • Quotable, self-contained sentences
  • Entity and source signals

Consistent company facts across your site, Google Business Profile, directories and author pages, so engines can tell who you are and why you are credible.

    • Consistent name and details
    • Author pages with real credentials
    • Mentions on relevant third-party sites
  • Monthly tracking

Citation share, AI-referred traffic in GA4 and changes in answers, reported monthly with the next pages to work on.

    • AI referrals tracked in GA4
    • Answer changes logged
    • Next actions listed

Our generative engine optimization method

Map the questions

We collect the questions buyers ask from your sales team, support inbox, Search Console and AI engines, and pick the ones that lead to revenue.

Measure the baseline

Each priority question is run through the main AI engines and we record who is cited, what is said about you and where the answer is wrong.

Fix the foundations

Indexing, snippet eligibility, page speed and site structure are checked and repaired before any content work.

Rewrite for citation

Pages are rewritten in line with the GEO paper's findings: direct answers, cited sources, quotations from real experts and specific statistics.

Build credibility off-site

We correct inconsistent company facts across profiles and directories and pursue genuine mentions on sites the engines already trust.

Re-measure monthly

The same questions are re-run every month, so changes in citations are tracked against the baseline rather than guessed.

06

GEO services versus an AI SEO agency

The labels overlap. An AI SEO agency may mean two different things: an agency that uses AI to do SEO faster, or one that optimizes for AI search. We do the second, and we use AI tools in the work where they help, for example to run hundreds of test questions across engines or to spot pages missing direct answers. Writing and fact-checking stay with people, because the whole point of GEO is being a source an engine can trust.

If your priority is the full technical and content SEO programme with AI built in, see AI SEO services from our implementation team. If the focus is narrower, on short, direct answers that voice assistants and featured snippets pick up, read about answer engine optimization.

07

What GEO costs

We scope GEO after a free review and quote a fixed fee, since cost depends on how many pages and questions matter and how much foundational work your site needs. For market context, WebFX's GEO pricing guide, as published in October 2026, lists monthly programmes at $1,500 to $5,000 for small businesses, $5,000 to $25,000 or more for mid-size companies and $25,000 to $50,000 or more for enterprises. It puts one-off GEO projects at $5,000 to $50,000, and AI visibility tracking tools at $50 to $1,000 or more a month.

Be wary of anyone guaranteeing citations. AI answers change from one day to the next and differ by user and location. What can be promised is a measured baseline, a clear method and honest monthly reporting.

Questions about generative engine optimization

What is generative engine optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is improving your content so AI systems such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity cite it in their answers. Research from IIT Delhi and Princeton found that citing sources, adding quotations and adding statistics raised visibility in AI answers by up to 40%.
Is GEO different from SEO?
It builds on SEO rather than replacing it. Pages still need to be indexed and eligible for snippets, according to Google. GEO adds answer-first writing, stronger evidence and tracking of citations across AI engines.
Do I need special schema or an llms.txt file for AI search?
Google says no special AI files, markup or schema are needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google's John Mueller is reported to have said no AI system currently uses llms.txt. Standard structured data can still help ordinary search features.
Do AI Overviews reduce website traffic?
Studies suggest they reduce clicks. Pew Research found users clicked a traditional result 8% of the time when an AI summary appeared against 15% without one, and Ahrefs found a 34.5% lower click-through rate for position one when an AI Overview showed.
How long does generative engine optimization take?
Foundation fixes can show within weeks once pages are re-crawled. Citation gains from rewritten content and off-site credibility usually build over several months, which is why we measure against a baseline every month.
How much do GEO services cost?
WebFX's guide, as published in October 2026, lists $1,500 to $5,000 a month for small businesses and more for larger ones. We quote a fixed fee after reviewing your site and the questions that matter to your buyers.
