How to track behavior so the data means something

A behavior tracking sheet records each occurrence of a clearly defined behavior during an observation period: how often it happened (frequency), how long it lasted (duration) or how long it took to start after an instruction (latency). Dividing a count by the time observed gives a rate per hour, which lets you compare days with different session lengths.

A behavior chart is the simpler, visible version for children: a grid of time periods where a teacher or parent marks how the day went against two or three goals. Our kit includes both: the data sheet for the BCBA's decisions and the chart for the learner's motivation.

Three rules make the data useful: define the behavior so two observers would agree, record the observation time, and mark when the intervention starts so baseline and intervention can be compared on the graph.

Behavior tracking questions

What is the difference between a behavior chart and a behavior tracking sheet?
A behavior chart is a simple visual record for the learner, often with smiley faces or stars. A behavior tracking sheet records counts, durations and times for analysis. This kit has both.
Which measure should I use?
Frequency for behaviors with a clear start and end that happen often, duration for behaviors that last a while such as tantrums, and latency for how long it takes to start after an instruction.
Does it graph automatically?
Yes. Each behavior gets its own graph showing baseline, intervention and maintenance in different colors, with a goal line.
Can teachers and parents use it?
Yes. The printable charts are designed for home and classroom, and the spreadsheet is simple enough for anyone to log in.
Does it work in Google Sheets?
Yes. Import the .xlsx file into Google Sheets.
