How a token economy works

A token economy is a reinforcement system where a learner earns tokens, such as stars or checks on a token board, for target behaviors, then exchanges a set number of tokens for a reward they chose. A token board makes the system visible: the learner sees how many tokens they have and how many are left before the reward.

Start small: three tokens, earned quickly, for a reward the learner really wants. As the learner succeeds, increase the number of tokens per exchange step by step (thinning), so the behavior holds up with less frequent reinforcement. Our tracker records when each step's criterion is met and shows the current step.

A first-then board is the simplest version: first the task, then the reward. It is often the right starting point for young learners before a full token board.

Token board questions

What is a token board?
A token board is a visual board where a learner earns tokens for target behaviors and exchanges a set number for a chosen reward.
How many tokens should a token board have?
Start with as few as needed for quick success, often 3 for new learners, and move to 5 or 10 as the learner succeeds. The kit includes all three sizes.
What is a first-then board?
A two-panel board that shows the task first and the reward after it. It is a simple way to teach waiting for a reward.
Can parents use it at home?
Yes. The boards and choice menu are designed for home and classroom as well as therapy sessions.
What does thinning mean?
Gradually requiring more tokens per exchange as the learner succeeds, so behavior is maintained with less frequent rewards. The tracker includes a step-by-step thinning plan.
